Aims of the Mathematics Curriculum
As we teach the Mathematics curriculum, our teaching and learning will be based upon the following three aims.
The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
You can view the progressive Maths Curriculum by clicking on the document below; this will allow you to see the objectives covered, along with the previous and next years' objectives to see how maths is taught throughout our school.
'Twosday'
We celebrated 'Twosday' because it was the 2.2.22. We did everything around the number 2. What calculations do you know that equal 2?
Our Calculations Policy
Please find below, two Calculation's policies. In 2014, our school worked in conjunction with other local Pyramid schools to create a cohesive Calculation Policy for all of our children. This is the current policy in place - please click on the document below to access this.
This academic year, our Maths Leader has been reviewing the Pyramid Calculation policy, which can also be found below for exploration. Once this has been finalised it will be emailed to all parents.
The Calculation Policy provides guidance on the calculation strategies, methods and progression from the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) right through to Year 6 using our method of concrete, pictorial and abstract method of solving calculations. It will aim to help parents to further assist their children, as well as provide guidelines for teachers to provide consistency in the teaching of mathematics across our school. Although not exhaustive, it outlines the key strategies taught across our schools.
Mathematics in EYFS
We recently led a meeting to introduce the key terms of mathematics within EYFS, for new parents to attend to allow them to see how maths was taught and what support they could provide at home. Please, see attached Early Years Meeting documents, with the PowerPoint on and a supporting document with guidance on what can be done at home to support mastering of maths.
If you have any questions or queries regarding our Mathematics curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact Miss West, our Mathematics Leader.
